The History of Fernangeles Elementary

Fernangeles Elementary School, which opened in 1946, is part of the newly formed Local District Northeast which is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Fernangeles is located in the East San Fernando Valley. It is a few minutes away from Hansen Dam, and the Whiteman and Burbank Airports. The community has shifted over the last 10-15 years from a largely Anglo community to a predominantly Latino and immigrant community. The majority of students have Spanish as a primary language. Other languages spoken by the students include Armenian, Chinese, Punjab, Tagalog, Tongan, Thai and Vietnamese.

The Sun Valley community began as a rural agricultural community. In the 1940’s and 50’s it was a middle class and blue-collar rural-suburban community. The major employers of this community included, aerospace, several breweries and a car manufacturing plant. Only one brewery is still in operation. It is now more, a working class and working poor community. It’s needs for social service support have increased with the decline of the local economy. As in many parts of the San Fernando Valley there are few free and low cost health and human services for children and families. As a commitment to addressing these needs, Fernangeles applied for and received a Healthy Start-SB 620 Planning Grant in 1997 and an Operational Grant in 1998 as a member of the East Valley Healthy Start Consortium. Under this grant, students and families are provided school site access to health and human services.

The Fernangeles community is both a residential and a heavy industrial area. Many local businesses include a dump, auto dismantlers, tile manufacturing, cement materials, asphalt and recycling companies. Though the majority of houses in this area are single family dwellings, many hidden unpermitted buildings and garage conversions provide high density, unsafe, sub-standard living accommodations. These dwellings often have no insulation, running water, safe cooking areas, heating or air conditioning.

Fernangeles is a school dedicated to helping all our children learn, grow, and succeed in learning.
